DeathSpank Review

DeathSpank is a much anticipated Xbox live arcade and PlayStation network game from creator Ron Gilbert, who was made famous by his Monkey Island game series. Gilbert described the game as a cross between Monkey Island and Diablo. Who wouldn't be excited about that? So, when the game dropped this Wednesday on Xbox live arcade I was happy to pick it up and give it a try.

The game brings Tom Gilbert's humor right along with it. DeathSpank is an over-the-top hero, out on a quest to bring the world justice, honor, and bacon on his way to find a mysterious item known only as "The Artifact". Within seconds, I was rolling in laughter at Gilbert's great humor.

My first thirty minutes with the game were great. I was hacking and slashing my way through jokes and fun. The game also has lots of RPG elements, with huge amounts of loot that are fun to collect and hoard, new abilities to level up and unlock, and all kinds of cool weapons with different effects.

However, things started to drag on rather quickly. The combat is fun at first, but quickly gets repetitive. Further into the game you are introduced to a combo system that mixes things up a bit, and gives combat some strategy, but there is a good 4-5 hour lull prior to that where you are just pressing a button over and over again.

However, my main gripe with the game is the co-op. Touted as a full fledged co-op experience, this is really more of a co-op hack. The second player has the option to control Sprinkles, a support wizard that can cast a few spells and heal Deathspank. The heal ability is very helpful, but playing as Sprinkles gets stale pretty quickly. Sprinkles is not a full-fledged character like Deathspank is. He cannot pick up new weapons or armor, he can not earn new abilities as he levels up, and he cannot interact with NPCs or complete quests. The Sprinkles you play with at the beginning of the game is the same Sprinkles you'll be playing with through to the end.

All in all, Deathspank is a good, solid game that is probably worth the 15 bucks it will set you back. It is not, however, the next Monkey Island phenomenon.
